THE STORY BEHIND
H & H BARBERSHOP
At H&H Barbershop, Al Henry cuts more than just hair—he brings laughter to everyone who walks through the door. Growing up in Maiden, North Carolina, Henry’s life took a hard turn when he was sentenced to six years in prison on drug charges, causing him to miss important time with his family. While incarcerated, he discovered his talent for comedy, writing jokes and performing for fellow inmates, which set him on a new path.
For over 20 years, Henry has been cutting hair and making people laugh. His barbershop is known for its lively atmosphere, where customers come as much for the laughs as for the haircuts. Regulars appreciate his humor, and Henry often weaves the personalities of his customers into his comedic routines, making each visit unique and entertaining.
Outside the shop, Henry shares his comedic talents with local nonprofits, churches, and at community events. Though balancing his passion for barbering and comedy isn’t always easy, his goal remains the same: to spread joy and laughter while staying rooted in his community.

Reflecting on his past, Henry often shares life lessons with young people, encouraging them to lead rather than follow, hoping to steer them away from the same mistakes he once made. His journey is a testament to resilience, showing that it’s possible to turn a tough situation into a reason to smile.
Whether he’s telling jokes or giving haircuts, Henry’s mission is clear:
"to make the world a little brighter, one laugh at a time."
